Palace on Wheels

Book India's most iconic luxury train journey with Eastern Sojourns — Delhi's trusted travel agency for Palace on Wheels packages, expert itinerary planning, and seamless booking.

What Is the Palace on Wheels?

The Palace on Wheels, launched in 1982, is India's first luxury heritage train and a joint initiative between the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC) and Indian Railways. It is widely recognized as the World's Leading Luxury Indian Royal Train. The concept of the Palace on Wheels was inspired by the royal background of its coaches — originally designed as personal coaches of the rulers of Rajputana, including Baroda and the Nizam. Today, the train blends that regal legacy with world-class modern amenities. Voted one of the best luxury trains globally, this journey promises unforgettable memories and unparalleled elegance. In Condé Nast's Readers' Choice Awards 2024, it was voted No. 1 "Best Train Trips in the World."

The Palace on Wheels Itinerary — 7 Nights, 8 Days of Royal India

The Palace on Wheels train journey is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that takes travellers to India's iconic destinations in Rajasthan and Agra on a 7 Nights/8 Days luxury tour. The train runs every Wednesday from September to April. There are no departures from May to August.

Day-by-Day Destination Highlights

The train departs from Safdarjung Railway Station, New Delhi, and covers a breathtaking arc of royal India:

Route: Delhi → Jaipur → Sawai Madhopur → Chittorgarh → Udaipur → Jaisalmer → Jodhpur → Bharatpur → Agra → Delhi.

Here is what passengers experience at each stop:

  • 🏯 Jaipur (The Pink City): Guests visit Amber Fort, with an expert guide providing narration. An elephant ride up to the fort offers a taste of how the maharajas of Rajasthan once travelled.

  • 🐆 Sawai Madhopur (Ranthambore): Day 3 of the Palace on Wheels tour takes you on a safari of Ranthambore National Park and a visit to Chittorgarh Fort.

  • 🚣 Udaipur: Guests enjoy a boat ride on the serene Lake Pichola.

  • 🐪 Jaisalmer: A camel safari on the Sam Sand Dunes — one of Rajasthan's most iconic experiences.

  • 🕌 Jodhpur: A sightseeing tour includes the breathtaking Umaid Bhawan Palace — constructed between 1928 and 1943, one of the largest private residences on earth.

  • 🐦 Bharatpur: A rickshaw ride through the UNESCO-listed Keoladeo Bird Sanctuary.

  • 🕍 Agra: The Palace on Wheels culminates in Agra, home of the iconic Taj Mahal.

What's Included in the Palace on Wheels Package?

Your fare includes all accommodations, meals, and non-alcoholic drinks. You also need not worry about extra fees for sightseeing tours, entrance to monuments and palaces, a camel ride in Jaisalmer, a shared jeep safari in Ranthambore, a boat ride in Udaipur, and a rickshaw ride in the Bharatpur bird sanctuary. The train features an array of amenities designed to keep you entertained, relaxed, and pampered — from an Ayurvedic spa to personal butlers, from a traditional welcome ceremony to classic royal dining. A fully equipped medical kit is on board, and a doctor is on call at every station. The train is centrally air-conditioned, with onboard temperature maintained at 22 degrees Celsius.
